Common Private Tracker Terminology

Understanding the language of private trackers is essential for navigating these communities. Here's a comprehensive guide to the most common terms you'll encounter.

Ratio and Upload/Download Terms

Ratio

Your ratio is calculated as: Upload รท Download

Most trackers require a minimum ratio of 1.0, meaning you must upload at least as much as you download. A ratio of 2.0 means you've uploaded twice as much as you've downloaded.

Example:

  • Downloaded: 100 GB
  • Uploaded: 150 GB
  • Ratio: 1.5

Buffer

Buffer is the extra upload credit above your download amount. It's essentially your "safety net" for downloading more content.

Example:

  • Downloaded: 100 GB
  • Uploaded: 200 GB
  • Buffer: 100 GB (the extra upload)

With a 100 GB buffer, you could download another 100 GB and still maintain a 1.0 ratio.

Freeleech (FL)

Freeleech means downloads don't count against your ratio, but uploads still do. This is the best way to build buffer!

Types of freeleech:

  • Site-wide FL - All torrents are freeleech (usually during special events)
  • Partial FL - Only certain categories or torrents
  • Personal FL - Tokens you can use on specific torrents
  • 50% FL - Only half the download counts against you

Neutral Leech

Neutral leech means neither downloads nor uploads count toward your ratio. Useful for grabbing content without affecting stats.

Hit and Run (H&R)

Hit and Run is downloading a torrent without seeding it for the required time. This is a serious offense on most trackers.

Typical H&R requirements:

  • Seed for a minimum time (e.g., 72 hours, 1 week)
  • OR reach a certain ratio on that torrent (e.g., 1.0)
  • OR seed until there are enough seeders

Consequences:

  • H&R warnings
  • Ratio penalties
  • Account suspension
  • Permanent ban (for repeated offenses)

Tracker Types and Ratios

Ratioless

Ratioless means the tracker doesn't enforce upload/download ratio requirements. You don't have to worry about maintaining your ratio.

Important: Some ratioless trackers still have H&R requirements! You must seed for a specified time even if ratio doesn't matter.

Examples of ratioless trackers:

  • Some anime trackers
  • Some niche trackers
  • Community-focused trackers

Ratio-based

Ratio-based trackers require you to maintain a minimum ratio (usually 0.4 to 1.0). This is the most common type.

Bonus Points and Credits

Bonus Points (BP)

Bonus Points are earned for seeding torrents over time. You can exchange them for upload credit, freeleech tokens, or other perks.

Different trackers call them different things:

  • Bonus Points (BP)
  • Orbs
  • Lumens
  • Seedpoints
  • Karma

How to earn:

  • Seed torrents (more torrents = more points)
  • Longer seeding time = more points
  • Larger torrents often earn more points

What you can buy:

  • Upload credit (GB added to your upload stats)
  • Freeleech tokens
  • Custom titles
  • Invites
  • VIP status

Note: Not all trackers have bonus point systems.

Seeding and Downloading Terms

Seedbox

A seedbox is a remote server optimized for torrenting with high-speed connections (typically 1Gbps or faster).

Benefits:

  • 24/7 seeding without your computer running
  • Fast upload speeds for better ratios
  • Privacy (your home IP isn't exposed)
  • No ISP throttling

Upload and Content Terms

Scene Release

Scene releases follow strict standards set by "The Scene" - underground release groups with specific rules for encoding, naming, and packaging.

P2P Release

P2P releases are made by individuals or groups specifically for peer-to-peer sharing, not following scene rules.

Internal Release

Internal releases are made by the tracker's own release groups, often with higher quality standards.

Remux

A remux is a video file extracted from a Blu-ray or other source without re-encoding. It maintains the original quality but in a more convenient container (like MKV).

Encode

An encode is a video that has been compressed/re-encoded to reduce file size while maintaining quality.

Trumped

A torrent is trumped when a better version is uploaded and the old one is deleted or marked as obsolete.

Common trump reasons:

  • Better quality
  • Proper vs. improper release
  • Complete vs. incomplete
  • Better source

Account and Community Terms

Invite

An invite is permission to join a private tracker, sent by an existing member.

Types:

  • Official invites - Through the tracker's invite system
  • Recruitment threads - On other trackers' forums
  • Applications - Open application periods
  • Interviews - Like RED's interview system

Invite Tree

Your invite tree is the chain of people you've invited. If they break rules, it can affect you.

User Classes

Common user classes from lowest to highest:

  1. New/Peasant
  2. User
  3. Power User
  4. Elite/VIP
  5. Torrent Master
  6. Moderator
  7. Administrator
  8. SysOp

Technical Terms

RSS Feed

RSS feeds let you automatically download new torrents matching certain criteria.

Autodl-irssi

Autodl-irssi is a tool for automatically downloading torrents as soon as they're announced, crucial for racing on some trackers.

Special Events and Promotions

Double Upload

Double upload events mean your uploads count twice toward your ratio.

Half Download

Half download means only 50% of what you download counts against your ratio.

Staff Picks

Staff picks are torrents chosen by staff, often with freeleech or bonus points.
